LAUSD EdTech and Apple present: iPad Best Practices

We're pleased to announce the following FREE Professional Development Seminar hosted by LAUSD EdTech and presented by Apple Education.

Summary

There really is an app for that. Because they work on mobile devices, apps enable learning both inside and outside the classroom. And with thousands of apps on the App Store, you’re sure to find the perfect one. From math games to vocabulary flash cards to anatomy visualizers, there’s an app for every subject and every level of instruction — from preschool to higher education. Apps help personalize instruction, address a variety of learning styles, and create highly interactive classrooms. That not only makes for a more engaging learning environment, it also results in performance improvements across the board. And since most students are familiar with the Apple devices these apps are made for, they can start using them right away.
But how do you manage and deploy these apps? What about configuring a classroom set of Apple mobile devices to use your LAUSD wireless network? What about getting a volume discount on purchasing apps? Join Apple Education Sr. Systems Engineer Dave Douglas for an in-depth look at planning and deploying and managing iOS devices on your LAUSD campus or department.

What we’ll cover:

iPads in kindergarten in Maine

Schools hope iPads can help kindergartners learn

Kindergarten classes are supplementing crayons, finger paints and flashcards with iPads, a development that excites supporters but that detractors worry is wasted on pupils too young to appreciate the expense.

Next fall, nearly 300 kindergartners in the central Maine city of Auburn will become the latest batch of youngsters around the country to get iPad2 tablets to learn the basics about ABCs, 1-2-3s, drawing and even music.

"It's definitely an adventure, and it'll be a journey of learning for teachers and students," said Auburn kindergarten teacher Amy Heimerl, who received an iPad ahead of the full deployment in the fall. "I'm looking forward to seeing where this can take us and our students."

But the $200,000 that Superintendent Tom Morrill is proposing to spend on iPads -- which retail for around $500 -- might be better spent on some other school program, said Sue Millard of Auburn, who has children in the fourth grade and high school. She also questions whether kindergartners are old enough to appreciate the effort.

"I understand you have to keep up with technology, but I think a 5-year-old is a little too young to understand," she said.

MAINE WAS THE FIRST state to equip students statewide with computers when it distributed Apple laptops to all seventh- and eighth-graders in 2002 and 2003. The program has since expanded, with laptops parceled out to about 50 percent of high school students.

The state Department of Education says it believes Auburn is the first school district in Maine that will give iPads to kindergartners. The school board last week unanimously approved the plan to give all kindergartners iPads next fall.

The iPad is a powerful tool with hundreds of teaching applications, Morrill said. With its touchpad screen, it's simple to use and can bring learning to life with imagery and sounds, he said.

"It's a revolution in education," Morrill said.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller declined to comment on how iPads are being used in schools, but dozens of school districts around the country have been giving iPads to students. Schools in Omaha, Neb.; Columbiana, Ohio; Huntington, W. Va.; Paducah, Ky.; Charleston, S.C.; and Scottsdale, Ariz., are among the places where kindergarten pupils are using them.

Angus King, the former Maine governor who launched the state's laptop program, said the idea of iPads in kindergarten wows him. Anything that holds the attention of pupils will help in the learning process, he said.

"If your students are engaged, you can teach them anything," King said. "If they're bored and looking out the window, you can be Socrates and you're not going to teach them anything. These devices are engaging."

Morrill is convinced that in the end, using iPads to teach kindergarten will lead to improved student proficiency scores.

HEIMERL, ONE OF FIVE kindergarten teachers in the district who got iPads last week, was impressed as she checked out apps for phonics, building words, letter recognition and letter formation.

"The more education teachers have using these tools the better we can enhance children's learning and take them to that next level," said Heimerl, a teacher at Park Avenue Elementary School.

Not everyone is sold. Larry Cuban, a professor emeritus of education at Stanford University and the author of Oversold and Underused: Computers in Schools , said there's no proof that computers bring learning benefits to pupils that young.

"There's no evidence in research literature that giving iPads to 5-year-olds will improve their reading scores," he said.

Peter Pizzolongo of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, based in Washington, said iPads can be an effective supplement to three-dimensional objects, whether they be books or building blocks.

The best use of iPads is probably in elementary and special education classes because the devices are so easy to use, said Nick Sauers of Iowa State University's Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education.

Restoring Multiple iOS Devices Using Xcode Organizer

Oregon School District Canby has been a big pioneer of deploying iOS in the classroom and yesterday they published an exciting new tutorial on updating iOS on multiple iPads/iPod Touchs to the latest firmware in a single pass.

<http://wiki.canby.k12.or.us/groups/ipodusergroup/wiki/a507f/>

The solution utilizes Xcode Organizer and would allow a site admin to avoid spending the whole day updating iPads one at a time.

If you are responsible for the care and feed of more than 10 iPads this is something you need to read.

Happy Monday everyone!

Apple Education Licensing Program

Hi there everyone,

We've been seeing an uptick in requests about software licensing so I thought I would just send this update out to the group.

LAUSD does not currently enroll in any type of Annual software agreement. Over the years LAUSD schools ( and Los Angeles Charters) have purchase the Apple Maintenance Program ( aka "AMP"). AMP was only available at the time of CPU purchase and is no longer offered.

Apple Education does currently offer a Volume License Program however it is generally targeted to districts who purchase their software centrally. The Volume License program also recognizes that Apple's software titles often require multiple items to updated simultaneously. For example the new iMovie '11 requires Mac OS X 10.6. Cases like this are the norm and as such Apple Education only offers a "Mac OS Collection" at volume discounting.

The "Mac OS Collection" includes Mac OS X, iLife and iWork in a single bundle. If you were to purchase the "Mac OS Collection" you would be immediately be given access to Mac OS X 10.6 (and earlier), iLife '11 (and earlier), and iWork '09 (and earlier). For a one year period you would automatically sent any upgrades for a 12 Month period for Mac OS X, iLife, iWork.

For an overview of the entire program offering please visit:

http://www.apple.com/education/licensingprogram/

Note: An important aspect of Apple's volume license program is that the program requires you to cover 100% of your Macs purchased in the last 4 years.

A compete FAQ on Apple's Education Licensing Program is listed here:

http://www.apple.com/education/licensingprogram/faq.html

I hope this can help answer some of your questions. Please let us know how your local Apple Education team can best help you plan for your future software needs.

The Collaborative Classroom Seminar Announced

Description

Today's collaborative classroom is a dynamic, searchable, and social environment. Students continue to define the learning environment within their current social paradigms. How are you teaching your students search? Are you still printing your word processing documents because it continues to be the simplest way to hand in work? How do we enable teachers to build a digital library full of the best teaching resources at your school?

Join us for this exciting three-hour, hands-on seminar where we will take on these real-world classroom challenges. You will spend time creating word processing documents in a web-based searchable resource library. You will turn in assignments to your instructor. You and your peers will have the opportunity to comment on each other’s work and review every version of a document as it evolves. Together we will set up your own wiki and discuss how you can protect your work from other users. Schools today must look for new ways to do more with less. Apple’s Wiki Server is an efficient way to modernize your curriculum while using the most of your current investments in PC’s and Macs.

Collaborate with Apple System Engineers and your fellow educators to discover Apple’s Wiki Server 2 in OS X Server Snow Leopard.

Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century

There is a way to bridge the digital divide. A way to engage stu- dents and make education relevant for learners who live in a digital world.
How? Research shows that students with routine access to laptop computers score higher assessments, demonstrate better analytical skills, engage in problem solving, and collaborate more effectively on schoolwork* - all of which, ultimately lead to higher student achievement.
The Laptop Program, Rockman, ET AL, 1998.

Join us for a visit to Melrose Elementary Mathematics Science Technology Magnet (K-6) in Los Angeles USD to see how 24/7 access to wireless technologies and digital curriculum demon- strate a vision of 21st century learning. The Melrose Elementary MST Magnet provides 1 to 1 access to laptops for students and teachers in grades 3-6. Students use digital tools on a daily basis for research, writing, skills development and media crea- tion. Unique features of Melrose MST Magnet’s digital learning environment include robotics and social networking.

Supported by strong professional development and commit- ted leadership, the teachers encourage students to communi- cate their best thinking in compelling new ways. Learners are highly motivated to collaborate, create and publish their work digitally. Principal Bernadette Lucas has worked in collabora- tion with an outstanding faculty, staff and community. Their hard work has positioned this innovative school model on the forefront of student learning.

WWDC 2010

Apple's World Wide Developer Conference 2010 was announced today <http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/>.

Sessions to consider attending:

There are 5 topics this year: Applications Frameworks, Core OS, Developer Tools, Graphics & Media, and Internet & Web.

Here are some session that pertain to our EDU customers.

Applications Frameworks:

  • Managing Mobile Devices
    • Devices running iPhone OS are as easy to configure and manage as they are to use. Learn about the new Mobile Device Management architecture and discover how to use new Over-The-Air (OTA) capabilities to erase or lock a device and query for important device information. OTA also lets you remotely deploy configuration profiles, install in-house applications, and make managed iPhone deployments even more manageable.

  • Mobile Device Management Lab
    • Discuss your organization-specific deployment and device management questions with Apple engineers.

Graphics and Media:

  • Advances in HTTP Live Streaming
    • HTTP Live Streaming lets you deliver video using HTTP from a standard Web server. Gain a practical understanding of the details behind deployment of live and on-demand streams. Learn how to design for mobility and the best practices for delivering video into your application or on the web.
  • HTTP Live Streaming Lab
    • HTTP Live Streaming provides live or on-demand video using the same technology that powers the web. Get one-on-one technical assistance and development advice from the HTTP Live Streaming and video engineering teams. Bring your code and your questions.

Internet & Web:

  • Delivering Audio and Video Using Web Standards, Part 1
    • HTML5 is the best way to deliver audio and video in web pages in Safari. Discover basic techniques for delivering media with HTML5 and master the JavaScript APIs necessary to design and implement your own custom media controls to match the look and feel of your website. Learn platform-specific details and best practices for delivering a seamless media experience in Safari on iPhone OS, Mac OS X, and Windows.
  • Delivering Audio and Video Using Web Standards, Part 2
    • Learn to integrate HTML5 video with CSS3 2D and 3D transforms and animations to deliver rich media experiences for Safari on iPhone OS, Mac OS X, and Windows. See how to add advanced features such as closed captions, and understand how to modify your code so that your video can be embedded in other websites in a way that is compatible with multiple platforms and web browsers.
  • HTML5 Audio and Video Lab
    • Meet with Apple engineers and technology evangelists for hands-on assistance delivering audio and video with HTML5. Get practical tips on embedding, improving performance, handling errors, and optimizing for different screen sizes. Bring your code and your questions.

Some important changes you should be aware of:

1. The IT track has been eliminated. Rather this years conference is going to focus on some key technologies over and above the typical development tracks (which have not changed in some time). These new areas are in Graphics and Media <http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/sessions/#track-graphics> & Internet and Web <http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/sessions/#track-web>. I think these new areas will be key for those of you looking to develop new media applications and assets.

2. Multi-pack tickets (5 and 10) are no longer available.

3. Education pricing is $999. If you plan to purchase tickets via an PO, please let us know.

4. Both the iPhone and Mac developer programs were recently modified. The programs now cost only $99, included in this price is access to all the WWDC videos. So if you cannot make the trip due to budget or timing, this is a very good alternative. With the $99 you also get two Apple developer technical incidents and you can now register as a 'group' rather than an individual so the account isn't tied to just one person but rather a group or an organization.

As an FYI, last year's conference sold out in 1 month & 2 days and I see no reason why this year will be any different.
