Java Updates, Safari 4 and LAUSD Applications

To date we have had reports of:

  • 1 customer experiencing issues with Elluminate.
  • 1 School with 550 Macs experiencing issues with the GradeMax component of ISIS.

Both issues can be solved by prioritizing Java Runtime v 1.4.2 over other newer versions of Java.

To configure Java on your Mac to use version 1.4.2 preform the following tasks:

  1. Open Java Preferences. This can be found by going to: Macintosh HD:Applications:Utilities:Java
  2. Under the tab "General" reorder the preferred Java version so that J2SE 1.4.2 is at the top like the screenshot below.

Java.pngThis setting would need to be done per Mac OS X user if your Mac has been configured to use multiple accounts.

UCLA iTunes U Seminar

UCLA hosted a faculty/staff seminar focused on how/why faculty should deploy podcasting in their classrooms. It is a great reference for other faculty members or universities who are concerned about podcasting, for example 'I don't want to podcast my lecture because the students will stop showing up', etc.

**PRICES LISTED IN THIS RELEASE ARE RETAIL, PLEASE CHECK WITH THE LAUSD STORE FOR CURRENT CONTRACT PRICING**

Features Next Generation Architecture and Intel “Nehalem” Xeon Processors

Apple® today announced an updated Xserve® that delivers up to twice the performance of the previous system.* Using Intel “Nehalem” Xeon processors and a next generation system architecture, the 1U rack-optimized Xserve delivers up to an 89 percent improvement in performance per watt.** Xserve is available with up to two 2.93 GHz Intel Xeon processors and industry-leading storage options that include a low-power solid state drive (SSD) and up to 3TB of internal storage. Starting at $2,999, Xserve includes an unlimited client license for Mac OS® X Server version 10.5 Leopard®.

“The Xserve is the best workgroup server for our education, business and creative customers,” said David Moody, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Mac Product Marketing. “With up to twice the performance, better power efficiency and an innovative SSD drive option, this is the best Xserve we’ve ever made.”

The new Xserve includes Intel Xeon processors running at speeds up to 2.93 GHz, each with an integrated memory controller with three channels of 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC memory that delivers up to 2.4 times the memory bandwidth while cutting memory latency up to 40 percent.*** Using high-efficiency power supplies and intelligent thermal management, Xserve delivers a 19 percent reduction in idle power use.

Xserve’s industry-leading storage capabilities include a 128GB SSD boot-drive option that requires a fraction of the power of a hard disk and delivers up to 48 times faster random access times without occupying a drive bay. Xserve’s three 3.5 inch drive bays support both 7200 rpm SATA and 15,000 rpm SAS drives and can be configured with up to 3TB of internal storage. Two PCI Express 2.0 x16 expansion slots provide massive I/O bandwidth to support the latest high-bandwidth expansion cards. The Xserve RAID card option now delivers improved performance up to 497MB/s**** and supports RAID levels 0, 1 and 5 with 512MB of cache without using a valuable PCI Express expansion slot. A 72-hour backup battery is included for enhanced data protection.

Every Xserve ships with an unlimited client edition of Leopard Server, offering support for Mac®, Linux and Windows clients without the added cost of client-access licenses. Leopard Server extends Apple’s legendary ease of use with Server Assistant and Server Preferences, which allow even nontechnical users to quickly manage users and groups on the server and easily set up key services. Leopard Server includes Podcast Producer, the ideal way to automatically publish podcasts to iTunes® or the web; Wiki Server, allowing people to collaboratively create and modify their shared websites with just a few clicks; and iCal® Server, the world’s first commercial CalDAV standard-based calendar server. Leopard Server is fully UNIX compliant and LDAP and Active Directory support allows Xserve to fit right in to existing IT environments.

The new Xserve joins Apple’s latest hardware products in setting new standards for environmentally friendly design. Xserve uses PVC-free internal cables and components, contains no brominated flame retardants and features a power supply with an average energy efficiency of 89 percent.

Free Stanford course on developing iPhone software

Free Stanford course on developing iPhone software

BY DAN STOBER

Want to know how to write programs for the iPhone and iPod touch? Beginning this week, a Stanford computer science class on that buzzworthy topic will be available online to the general public for free.

The 10-week course, iPhone Application Programming, is a hot ticket. It begins today and videos of the classes will be posted at Stanford  on iTunes U two days after each class meeting (http://itunes.stanford.edu ). Copies of the slides shown in class will be available there as well.

The proliferation of third-party applications for Apple's iPhone has changed the device from a popular cell phone to a miniature computer. The Apple App Store offers more than 25,000 titles, dealing with everything from maps to business tools, games, photography, fishing and restaurant recommendations based on your location.

"There's a lot of interest in the iPhone," said Brent Izutsu, Stanford's project manager for Stanford on iTunes U. "This course provides an excellent opportunity for us to show the breadth and depth of our curriculum and the innovation of our students."

There are applications that can turn your iPhone into a musical instrument and one that will measure G-forces on your body as you steer your car through a corner. Snap a photo of the cover of almost any book, CD, DVD or video game and—with the right software—get links to ratings and reviews. According to Apple, the download count from its App Store has passed the 800 million mark.

Online viewers of the Stanford course will see the same lectures as  the on-campus students, but will not receive credit for the course <http://cs193p.stanford.edu>. Some of the student-developed apps from the fall-quarter class,  such as the Chinese-English dictionary Qingwen, are available at the  iTunes store.

"For Stanford, working with Apple allowed us to focus our energy on identifying and capturing great content while Apple provided us the technology to distribute it globally," Izutsu said.

The Department of Computer Science is part of the Stanford School of Engineering.
