Snow Leopard Server Tour

Snow Leopard Server makes it easier than ever for people to collaborate, communicate, and share information. Before you know it, your organization will be exchanging files with each other, collaborating on projects, accessing information remotely, creating and distributing podcasts, and more. In one afternoon, you’ll learn about exciting new features and enhancements and see how Snow Leopard Server is transforming organizations like yours using Macs, PCs, and iPhone devices. Space is limited, so reserve your seat today.

Seminar Agenda:

Hardware and Software Overview

A top-level introduction to Apple’s server hardware and software solutions, this overview will bring attendees up to speed on each product’s key features and capabilities.

Setup, Administration, and Integration

With Snow Leopard Server, Apple extends its legendary ease of use to the configuration, management, and monitoring of a server. This session will focus on the setup and configuration of servers and demonstrate how you can deploy powerful network services to your organization.

Collaboration and Communication with Snow Leopard Server

Snow Leopard Server offers a rich and full set of services that make it easy for users in your organization to collaborate efficiently. This session will discuss how you can use Mac OS X Server’s built-in services to: share calendars, schedule meetings, and coordinate events; access and synchronize contacts across multiple computers and devices; collaborate and communicate through their own wiki-powered intranet website; and securely send instant messages to communicate between users and groups.

Podcast Producer 2: An End-to-End Content Delivery Solution

Podcast Producer takes the complexity out of capturing and publishing professional- quality podcasts—enabling your organization to produce more podcasts with less work. In this session you’ll learn how easy it is to setup and use Podcast Producer to deliver corporate communication, employee training, and integration with iTunes U.

Scripting for System Administrators

Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server deliver the widest array of scripting technologies in a single box. And with Snow Leopard, the dramatically redesigned Services architecture lets you put management tools at the “point-of-need” where staff and managers require them the most. In this session you will learn how to use services to automate repetitive tasks for system setup, configuration, and other management duties.

iPhone Integration

Whether you use an iPhone or iPod touch in your organization, learn how Snow Leopard Server can not only assist with automatically configuring these mobile devices, but also provide access to key services such as Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Wiki, and Remote Access.

ABC News: Schools Dump Textbooks for iPods, Laptops

Teachers say students learn better from the devices, even multitasking.
For generations, school meant books -- lots of books. But not anymore. Around the country, from high school to grad school, textbooks are getting harder to find. Technology has made the library something that can fit into the palm of your hand.

Cushing Academy, a private school outside Boston, is dismantling its library altogether, giving away 20,000. Headmaster James Tracy said the decision was simple. "We decided that we can best use our resources if we decided to go with e-books and e-resources," he said.

Empire High School, a public school in Tucson, Ariz., is another textbook-free zone. Students there are given laptops on the first day of school instead of a pile of heavy books.

But Monticello High School in Virginia has launched an even lighter experiment in digital learning. A handful of classes are trying out the iPod Touch as a primary learning tool. English teacher Mae Craddock said she structures many of her lessons around the new technology, instructing students to research, read and write on their handheld devices. It is something that she says came naturally to them. "They took right away to it," she told ABC News. "There was no adaptation necessary."

Laptops and iPods cost money, of course, but so do textbooks; some can run a couple hundred dollars each. And because there is so much free educational material online, high-tech can sometimes mean low-cost.

There is another strike against traditional textbooks: They go out of date, sometimes within a year or so, and replacing them can cost a school district hundreds of thousands of dollars. But with new technology like e-books or handheld devices, updates can happen instantaneously.

Students at Monticello High School leap at the chance to use the iPod touches for schoolwork. They say it's quick, far more convenient than big textbooks -- and there is that "cool" factor.

But using Web-enabled devices in the classroom introduces a whole host of other issues. Sure, students are supposed to use the iPods for their class projects, but who will be the wiser if they shoot off an email or a tweet to their friends, or just surf the Web aimlessly instead of doing their work?

Craddock said that Monticello blocks many of the most popular social networking sites, but she encourages students to use Twitter during class to broadcast answers to questions.

All these distractions can also provide a useful lesson in how to navigate through a world where we're inundated with media and information all day long, she said. "They're multi-taskers -- way better than we are," she said. "It's something that people do in everyday life and that's a skill they need to know."

Not everyone is keen on the new technology, especially graduate students in their late 20s and early 30s who can't get used to the idea of reading assignments off a small device.

Emily Cherry, a first-year student at Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, is one of dozens of students selected to take part in a pilot program. Instead of textbooks and photocopied case studies, students are issued their own Kindle, the e-reader from Amazon, at the beginning of the year.

"For me it's just harder to digest. I'm much more of a visual person and I can recall where I read something on each page. And it's a little harder for me on the Kindle," she said. "I'm trying my hardest to embrace it, but I'm not sure I'm totally there yet."

While graduate schools are trying to make students more comfortable with the digital classroom of the future, high schools and even elementary schools are playing catch-up to students who already seem to have this kind of technology built into their DNA. And education experts say there's no turning back.

David Rose, a lecturer at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, said schools simply can't afford to rely on traditional textbooks because the social costs are too high.

"If we continue to prepare kids for their past, that's very expensive," he told ABC News, "Their future is largely going to be in new media. And textbooks are no longer preparing them for that future."

Java Updates, Safari 4 and LAUSD Applications

To date we have had reports of:

  • 1 customer experiencing issues with Elluminate.
  • 1 School with 550 Macs experiencing issues with the GradeMax component of ISIS.

Both issues can be solved by prioritizing Java Runtime v 1.4.2 over other newer versions of Java.

To configure Java on your Mac to use version 1.4.2 preform the following tasks:

  1. Open Java Preferences. This can be found by going to: Macintosh HD:Applications:Utilities:Java
  2. Under the tab "General" reorder the preferred Java version so that J2SE 1.4.2 is at the top like the screenshot below.

Java.pngThis setting would need to be done per Mac OS X user if your Mac has been configured to use multiple accounts.

Every Xserve ships with an unlimited client edition of Leopard Server, offering support for Mac®, Linux and Windows clients without the added cost of client-access licenses. Leopard Server extends Apple’s legendary ease of use with Server Assistant and Server Preferences, which allow even nontechnical users to quickly manage users and groups on the server and easily set up key services. Leopard Server includes Podcast Producer, the ideal way to automatically publish podcasts to iTunes® or the web; Wiki Server, allowing people to collaboratively create and modify their shared websites with just a few clicks; and iCal® Server, the world’s first commercial CalDAV standard-based calendar server. Leopard Server is fully UNIX compliant and LDAP and Active Directory support allows Xserve to fit right in to existing IT environments.

The new Xserve joins Apple’s latest hardware products in setting new standards for environmentally friendly design. Xserve uses PVC-free internal cables and components, contains no brominated flame retardants and features a power supply with an average energy efficiency of 89 percent.
